Calling all chili masters for Frost Festival
Have a great chili recipe? Consider participating in the Frost Festival Chili Bake-off at Gallien's Beach on Beaver Lake Sunday, Feb. 13, from noon to 3 p.m.
Drop-off time is 11 a.m.; participants must supply a crockpot and serving spoon.
The winner, judged by Frost Festival participants, takes home a $50 gift certificate to a local restaurant.

Breakfast to help service dog programs
There will be a pancake breakfast at the Derry Masonic Building on Broadway Sunday, Feb. 6, from 8 to 10:30 a.m.
Proceeds will benefit the New Hampshire Guide Dog Association and Puppy Raiser, as well as service dog foundations in New Hampshire.

Mini golf tournament will help many
The Upper Room hosts its second annual "Puttin' Families First" indoor mini golf tournament on Feb. 12 at the Barka Elementary School gym, 21 Eastgate Road. The event runs from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.
This event is held in conjunction with the Frost Festival weekend and includes an indoor 9-hole mini golf course, music, a hole-in-one challenge, raffles, prizes and ice cream sundaes. Teams of four can also enter to win trophies and prizes. A $250 donation is requested for a team.
Donations are requested for general admission with all proceeds benefiting children and families served by The Upper Room.

Check out book bargains at the library
The Friends of the Derry Libraries will host a book sale on Saturday, Feb. 12, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Derry Library at 64 East Broadway.
There is a large stock of sorted books, DVDs, videos, books-on-tape and CDs. Proceeds are used to purchase museum passes available to library patrons and to support the library programs.
Local poets to gather
The next meeting of the Hyla Brook Poets group, affiliated with the Frost Farm in Derry, will be Feb. 10 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at BeanTowne Coffee House on Route 111 in Hampstead.
Ellen Dore Watsono will read from her new collection, "Dogged Hearts." The reading series is free and open to the public.
Dore has written numerous collections of poetry. She is the poetry and translation editor for "The Massachusetts Review," and the director of The Poetry Center at Smith College in Northampton, Mass.
An open mic follows the readings; all audience members are invited to share their work. The next Hyla Brook Poets monthly writing workshop is Feb. 19 at the Coffee Factory in Derry. For information, contact Robert Crawford at email@example.com.
First Parish hosts blood drive
First Parish Congregational Church, 47 East Derry Road, hosts an American Red Cross blood drive on Feb. 5 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the church.
All donors receive a coupon for a free sub and also a long-sleeved Red Cross shirt.
