Shooting instruction program kicks off in Chester

CHESTER — More than 35 young people from around Rockingham County recently participated in a unique educational opportunity held at the Chester Rod and Gun Club. The 4-H "Introduction to Shooting Sports Workshop" provided basic instruction in both archery and firearms. The workshop was based on the philosophy that a proper introduction to shooting sports can set the stage for a lifetime of safe shooting enjoyment.

"I was very impressed with how orderly and safely the event was being conducted — not an easy task with that many kids to oversee and instruct," said Colin Buxton, Chester Rod and Gun Club president. "All the kids looked like they were having a great time and having loads of fun. These types of activities build skills and memories for the kids that they will carry with them for the rest of their lives."

The event was a community-based, hands-on activity managed by volunteers, with youth in leadership roles.

Kevin Williams, a federal shooting instructor who helped out at the event, said 14-year-old Daniel Turner, a Junior Rifle League and 4-H member from Derry, "is as good or better than some adults I have seen."

The workshop was the kickoff to a 4-H Shooting Sports Program that runs every other Saturday at the Chester Rod and Gun Club through May. Anyone is welcome to go and learn more about this program. For more details, visit http://extension.unh.edu/Counties/Rockingham/4hYthDev.htm or call 679-5616.
