Chester Library gets $2,000 worth of children's books
Chester Library wins grant for new books
CHESTER — Chester Public Library is among 12 public libraries across New Hampshire and Vermont to receive Children's Literacy Foundation sponsorships this spring.
A CLiF Rural Public Library Sponsorship includes $2,000 worth of new children's books, selected by the library, and a storytelling celebration for all the town's children at the local elementary school.
"I'm thrilled the library has received this grant," Chester Public Library director Tim Sheehan said. "We've had a tough time buying new books this year, due to a tight budget. This grant will allow us to add some new and fresh titles for kids."
Starting in April, CLiF will travel to each of these towns to deliver the new books and engage all students in a book discussion and a special storytelling presentation. Chester's visit is set for May 11.
The Rural Public Library program was started in 1998 to boost children's book collections at small libraries, with the expectation that increased exposure to great books and inspiring storytelling will improve children's literacy.
As part of the sponsorship, library directors choose new books from the CLiF book list, which includes more than 850 titles — classics, Caldecott and Newbery award winners, recent titles, and a wide selection of books by local authors and illustrators.
"The books we choose will help kids with class assignments," Sheehan said. "We'll also choose books for leisure reading."
In addition to the storytelling and new library books, CLiF also asks each library to nominate a local daycare or childcare center to receive a sponsorship. CLiF visits the daycare to tell stories, allows each child to choose a book to take home and keep, and donates an additional collection of children's books to remain on site.
