Resident runs for cancer research

Chester resident Christine Dyson is running the ninth annual B.A.A. Half Marathon presented by Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Jimmy Fund Oct.11, as a member of the official Dana-Farber team in the Running the Race Against Cancer(SM) program.

As a member of the Dana-Farber team, Dyson has committed to raise at least $500 for cancer care and research for both children and adults at world-renowned Dana-Farber Cancer Institute through its fundraising arm, the Jimmy Fund. The team goal is to raise $360,000.

"Dana-Farber runners in the B.A.A. Half Marathon are challenging themselves while helping those facing a much bigger challenge - fighting cancer," says Jack Fultz, the 1976 Boston Marathon winner who designs the training program for the Dana-Farber team.

The 13.1-mile, rolling course combines a looped and out-and-back route, beginning and ending on Park Drive near the Boston Park and Recreation's Rose Garden in the Back Bay Fens neighborhood of Boston. The event attracts a field of 5,000 runners including world-class athletes.

The B.A.A. Half Marathon is one of three annual events that connect the Boston Athletic Association and Dana-Farber. Other events include the Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk, held in September, and the Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge (DFMC) in the Boston Marathon, which takes place in April. A pilgrimmage for peace

Members of the Chester Congregational Baptist Church welcome walkers participating in the New England Pilgrimmage for Peace event as they travel through six New England states as part of their quest to bring awareness of world peace to everyone.

The church hosts a breakfast on Oct. 7 at 7:30 a.m. as part of the walkers trek through New England. For additional information, visit the Chester Congregational Baptist Church at www.chesterchurch.org.

Pinwheels for Peace

Chester Academy students joined with others from around the world to celebrate International Peace Day on Sept. 21. The annual event brings people together in many ways to celebrate peace.

In Chester, students created colorful paper pinwheels to place in front of the school, honoring International Peace Day. The student project was spearheaded by art teachers Lisa Blanchette and Judy Krassowski. The Pinwheels for Peace project is a worldwide art event to inspire students to convey their feelings about peace. Other local schools, including those in Derry, have also participated in the pinwheel art project.

Students also wrote their own original feelings and sentiments on the paper pinwheels before planting them in front of the school for all to see throughout the day.
