Sept. 11 events set in Londonderry, Chester

Mack's Apples in Londonderry will hold Military Appreciation Day from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 11.

Anyone with a military ID, past or present, is welcome to stop by a pick a peck of apples. Registration begins at 11 a.m. at the U-pick location on Mammoth Road. Gold and Blue Star mothers are also welcome to participate, as is anyone responsible for the children of a military family.

There will be a Sept. 11 remembrance ceremony at noon, with guest speaker retired Capt. Patricia Mack, a first responder at the World Trade Center. Benediction will be led by Jack Martin, who served in the U.S. Marine Corps and is currently a Moore Mart Mideast representative.

There will be entertainment, games, face-painting for the kids, refreshments and a dessert treat — all at no cost.

American Legion Post 27 of Londonderry will coordinate with Mack's, according to Acting Commander Emil Ouellette.

Residents may drop off items that Moore Mart will ship to military personnel serving overseas. Items requested include sample size toiletry items, brushes, hand-warmers, playing cards, feminine products, plain white socks and many more things. They also send school supplies for local schoolchildren.

Post 27 will salute those who lost their lives that day with a firing squad and the sound of "Taps." They will have a piece of the second tower and a piece from the Pentagon.

Chester will host Public Safety Day Saturday, starting with a memorial service at 8:30 a.m. to remember those who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001, at the fire station.

There will be an American Red Cross blood drive at Chester Academy from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

There will be demonstrations and information available from many groups, including Smokey Bear, the DHART helicopter, fire and police vehicles, haz-mat organizations, an inflatable fire truck slide, Manchester mounted police, extrication equipment, food vendors, New Hampshire Forest and Lands, and much more.

The day will end with a fireworks show at dusk.
