Parade kicks off Chester Fair Saturday

CHESTER | The annual Chester Town Fair is held Saturday at the recreational fields off Route 102.

The event begins with a parade at noon, stepping off from the town office complex on Chester Street and continuing down to the fair site. The day includes community organization displays, food, children's activities, games and music.

The fair concludes with the annual fireworks display at 9 p.m., this year dedicated to the memory of longtime fair volunteer, resident and pyrotechnic expert Dan Dwyer, who passed away in July.

Other activities include the pie bake-off and auction, raising money to support Chester's Community Food Pantry. The Chester Library hosts a cookie walk during the fair.

This may be the last year for the fair unless more volunteers step up to help organize the event. Longtime fair committee members Vaughn McGillen and Melissa Rossetti announced this is their last year they will volunteer to organize the fair and hope people come forward to keep the day going in the years ahead.

The fair has been the town's main community event for the past seven years, according to former fair organizer Hilary Hall, adding the fair has been well organized and paid for itself without any subsidy from the town.

The fireworks display this year will be in memory of Dwyer, Hall said, because he had such an enthusiasm for his fiery displays each year.

After the fireworks, residents leaving the field usually offer donations to help offset the costs, and the tradition of hosting the fireworks was also maintained by the approval of Chester taxpayers who voted each year to budget money for the display.

This year, the parade lines up at 11 a.m. at 84 Chester Street to kick off fair day. For information about the fair, e-mail chestertownfair@hotmail.com.
