CHESTER — Friendship, sharing stories of childhood, and mountains of support. These are just a few of their favorite things.
For mothers attending Chester MOMS Club meetings on a regular basis, it's a collaboration of education, togetherness, and sharing stories of children that makes for a fun time every week.
The nonprofit club formed several years ago to be an outlet for young mothers and their children. Now growing strong with more than 30 members on the books, the club seeks new members to get involved and have fun.
Activities include regular outings, community events, museum trips, park days, play groups, special guest speakers, and business meetings. The club supported the construction of the town's new community playground near Wason Pond and is very active in the community according to member Lara Kossacoff, who found the MOMS club after moving to Chester with a young family.
"I joined a year and a half ago, after moving here from California," Kossacoff said, adding the group was a big help for her and her young son, as they got acclimated to their new town.
Robin McDonough, of Raymond, said the group was a "godsend" for her as a mother of young children with a husband that travels extensively on business.
"It's a good support system," she said. "This group has been a savior for me."
Kossacoff said all the young children attending meetings with their moms now have their own relationships forging along.
"All our kids know each other," she said.
Kossocoff added new members are always welcome from not only Chester, but from Raymond as well. The children enjoy apple and pumpking picking trips to local orchards, and spend time playing during regular meting times, held at the Chester Congregational Baptist Church.
The group also donates to charitable organizations like the Chester community food pantry and other community causes.
Kossacoff said there is no obligation to join the club and all are welcome. Members can pick and choose activities they like and get involved as little or as much as they want.
"Just knowing there are people out there that support you," she said, "even if it's only once a week."
"We have a good time together," McDonough added.
