CHESTER — The town's senior community is invited to get fit and participate in a new health and nutrition program.
The town received a New Hampshire Senior Wellness Grant and brings free exercise and nutrition programs to older residents beginning on March 3.
Two programs, Healthy Moves and Healthy Eating, will be offered in weekly classes for 15 weeks, running through June 25.
Healthy Moves provides interventions to promote independence and slow the progression of chronic disease and disability. The twice-weekly class involves a series of exercises from a seated or standing position. Peer coaches are on site for assistance and the class is led by certified exercise instructor Kim Cremins, a Chester resident. The class is set for Monday and Wednesday afternoons at 1:30 p.m. in the multipurpose room of the Chester Town Office complex beginning March 3.
Healthy Eating offers seniors information about nutrition and how lifestyle changes can promote better health. The focus of this program will stress heart and bone health and nutrition strategies to help maintain or improve participants' wellness and independence and help prevent chronic illness development or progression. Weekly classes begin on Tuesday, March 4, at 1 p.m. at the Wason Pond Community Center, 603 Raymond Road.
The Chester Senior Citizens are an active group that meets regularly at the Wason Pond center for activities, parties, special events and friendship. The group plans several outings and luncheons every year and also offers special days for game-playing, tai chi and movies.
Open registration for the new fitness and nutrition series of programs in Chester is set for March 1 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Wason Pond Community Center.
