DERRY — The Derry-based Rhythm of New Hampshire Show Chorus had a strong showing at the Region One Sweet Adelines International Competition at Symphony Hall in Springfield, Mass., on May 5.
The a cappella women's barbershop chorus placed fourth in the Division A small chorus category out of a total of 12 choruses.
The chorus performed two songs for the four-member international judge's panel.
The group placed fourth in Division A (small chorus-under 31 members) and ranked eighth overall among all 21 choruses. Competitors included one large (65 members and over), six mid-size (31-64 members), and 14 small choruses.
"We've been working hard this past year on improving our vocal production," director Jessie Oslan said. "The competition in our division was fierce this year. So many of the choruses raised their performance levels and brought their best packages to the event."
Oslan said the group beat its score from last year by 18 points and got a lot of constructive feedback from the judges.
"We pride ourselves on being a fun, challenging singing organization," Oslan said. "We enjoy singing all forms of a cappella music along with the honor of keeping the American art form of barbershop alive for the next generation of singers."
Oslan invites any woman interested in learning the art of a cappella barbershop singing to stop by a rehearsal and see what it's all about.
"We're always looking to add women to our group, who have a love for singing and want to express themselves by really polishing their creative and performance talents," she said.
Rhythm of New Hampshire Show Chorus will perform at the Manchester Relay for Life event on June 2 and will also perform the national anthem and "God Bless America" at the New Hampshire Fisher Cats game on Aug. 18.
The group is a charter of Sweet Adelines International, a nonprofit musical organization with a membership of more than 27,000 women around the world.
Potential new members from age 14 and up can stop by a rehearsal Thursdays from 6:45 to 9 p.m. at the Marion Gerrish Community Center, 38 West Broadway, Derry.
