DERRY — The snow has finally started to fall and this year's Frost Festival organizers hope people will come out to enjoy the chill in the air.
One wintery way to enjoy the festival this year is the 5K for FFA snowshoe race, set for Feb. 11 at J & F Farms, 120 Chester Road.
The event gives people a chance to come out and learn about snowshoes.
Beginners can try the mini races and open snowshoeing. More advanced snowshoers can take part in the 5K and 2.5K races.
Top finishers will receive awards. There also will be a chance to play in a three-course snowshoe golf tournament.
The event will raise money to support agricultural education in New Hampshire through the FFA Foundation. FFA prepares more than 800 students around the state for successful careers and leadership positions in food, fiber and fuel production, environmental resource systems and global agriculture.
Registration for the 5K is $20 before Feb. 3. After that, price is $25. For the half course, 2.5K race, registration is $15, $20 after Feb. 3.
Students pay $10 and mini races cost $5. Snow golf is $5 per person.
Schedule of events is as follows:
9:30 a.m.: Registration for snowshoe race
10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.: Mini races and open snowshoeing; three-hole snow golf (teams of four)
11 a.m.: 5K and 2.5K snowshoe race
The snowshoe event is part of the annual Frost Festival, a weekend full of wintery outdoor activities and indoor family events set for Feb. 10-12 at various locations around Derry.
