Barka students turn off the tube for fun week

Barka community opts out of technology

DERRY — They were all screaming for ice cream last week instead of watching television.

Ernest P. Barka Elementary School hosted a week full of family activities to celebrate “Turn Off the Screen Week,” encouraging students to take part in activities like reading or sports instead of watching television, using the computer, or other technology.

The week began with a family ice cream social. That was followed by a Family Fitness/Zumba Night, an outdoor classroom painting project, and a talent show featuring singing, dancing and other unique talents from Barka students, staff and families.

The Barka PTA sponsored the week’s events. Donations collected from various activities will support the school’s Relay for Life team and the music department.
