Ryan Jameson Martin of Chester graduated from Colby-Sawyer College on May 8. A child development major, Martin was recognized with the Scholar-Athlete Award.
The Scholar-Athlete Award is presented to the graduating male senior who, in the opinion of the Athletic Advisory Committee, has made significant contributions to both the scholastic and varsity programs of the college.
Martin was a member of the Colby-Sawyer swimming and diving team for four years. He fit in with the team from the start, and it was not long before he was nicknamed "Rocket" by his teammates. His coach said of him: "Put him in the water and he's like a rocket full of explosive speed, and he's strong enough to swim even the longest races."
This year Martin swam in 25 races in duals meets. In a field of six swimmers, he took first place 14 times, second place six times, and third place three times. A captain of the team in 2008-2009, and again this past year, he led the team academically, as well as athletically, as he qualified for the New England Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Association Conference Meet all four years. He holds school records in seven events. Martin was named to The Commonwealth Coast Conference Academic All-Conference Team in 2009 and 2010.
Most recently, he was president of the Colby-Sawyer Chapter of Psi Chi and a member of Alpha Chi National Honor Society (2008-present) and the Wesson Honors Program (2007-present) and has made the Dean's List (fall 2006-present).
