Derry church honors Moravian traditions

DERRY — A local church is paying tribute to a centuries-old holiday tradition and invites the public to come along for the journey.

St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, 63 East Broadway, hosts a special holiday gathering featuring a viewing of the Christmas Putz.

The event is set for Dec. 9 at 6 p.m. in the church vestry. The event is free and the public is welcome to attend,

Putz is a German word meaning “to decorate or arrange” and is a Moravian tradition dating back many centuries.

Using elaborate scenes with miniature figures and landscapes, the St. Luke’s putz will tell the story of the birth of Jesus from his foretold coming to his birth, to Mary and Joseph escaping into Egypt.

In addition to viewing the putz, the night includes special music, desserts, caroling and holiday trivia games.

For information about St. Luke’s and the putz event, call the church at 434-4767.
