Derry show chorus looking 'ship shape'

Show chorus wins competition honors

DERRY — Members of the Rhythm of New Hampshire Show Chorus had a strong showing at the Region One Sweet Adelines International Competition at Symphony Hall in Springfield, Mass., on April 24, placing fifth in the Division A, small chorus category.

The a cappella women’s barbershop chorus performed two songs for the four-member international judge’s panel, including “I Can’t Give You Anything But Love,” and a “L-O-V-E” medley and “Love Letters,” both arranged by Nancy Bergman.

The group placed fifth in Division A (small chorus-under 31 members). Sweet Adelines choruses from across the globe range in size from 15-31 (Division A) to well over 120 members (Large Chorus) and perform their competition packages in English.

“Of all the choruses in Region One, Rhythm of NH had more new members than any other chorus competing,” chorus director said Jessie Oslan. “The competition in our division was fierce this year and so many choruses experienced large downward membership shifts. With about half of our chorus new this year’s contest was a great opportunity to obtain constructive feedback from the judges on what we’re doing well and those areas where the group can improve.”

Oslan said the chorus enjoys singing all types of a cappella music with the drive to keep the American art form of barbershop style alive for the next generation of singers.

New members are always welcome, she said.

“We’re always interested in women who have a passion for singing and want to use that passion to hone the art form of barbershop,” Oslan said.

RNH will also be performing the “Star Spangled Banner” and “God Bless America” at the New Hampshire Fisher Cats game on Aug. 10.

RNH welcomes new members as young as 14 years of age every Thursday from 6:45 to 9 p.m. at the Marion Gerrish Community Center, 38 West Broadway, Derry. Women interested in trying their vocal skills with the women of RNH can learn more by calling 800-696-7351 or visit RNHChorus.org.
