DERRY — Many residents are happy with the lack of snow so far this winter, but Frost Festival organizers would like to see the ground covered.
The 2012 Frost Festival is set for Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 11 and 12, at various locations around town.
The festival offers free outdoor winter activities at parks throughout town, including Alexander-Carr Park, Gallien's town beach and Hoodkroft Country Club.
Activities include sledding, snowboarding competitions, ice skating, ice fishing, snowmobile safety demonstrations, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, ice hockey, ice sculptures, a children's king and queen contest, and crafts.
The Frost Festival officially kicks off with the annual Frost Ball on Feb. 11 at Promises to Keep function hall on Route 28.
The ball includes dinner, dancing and entertainment; there is a special theme each year.
Tickets are $30 per person and are available in advance at the Town Administrator's office at the municipal center and the Parks and Recreation office in Veterans Hall.
Other events during Frost Festival Weekend include a free spaghetti luncheon for area senior citizens, sponsored by The Derry Village Rotary Club. The luncheon is held on Saturday, Feb. 11, at the Pinkerton Academy senior cafeteria.
The Beaver Lake Improvement Association also offers an adult fishing derby on Saturday at Gallien's town beach.
Certain Frost Festival activities are dependent on available snow and weather conditions.
