DERRY — Members of the Rhythm of New Hampshire Show Chorus were honored last month at the Region One Sweet Adelines International Competition.
The singing competition was held at Symphony Hall in Springfield, Mass. The Derry-based chorus placed fourth in the Division A small chorus category and also received the Most Improved Chorus Award.
The a cappella women’s barbershop chorus performed two songs for the four-member international judging panel.
Sweet Adelines chorus groups attended from all over the world.
“Competition provides an unbiased platform to see how we’re improving and what skillls we need to focus on for the next year,” show chorus director Jessie Oslan said. “Winning the Most Improved Chorus was thrilling because it celebrates all of the efforts and teamwork these ladies put into learning the a cappella barbershop craft this year.”
Oslan said the chorus prides itself on being a fun, challenging and educational singing organization. The group sings all types of music in an effort to keep the barbershop style of singing alive.
New members are always welcome.
“If women have loved television shows like ‘The Sing-Off’ or experienced a cappella in high school or at college, then they should try visiting Rhythm of New Hampshire Show Chorus to see if our chorus would be a good fit,” Oslan said. “We’re always interested in women who have a passion for singing and want to use that passion to hone the art form of barbershop.”
The chorus will perform the national anthem and “God Bless America” at a Fisher Cats baseball game in Manchester in August. The group is also planning a fall show at the Derry Opera House in October.
The group welcomes new singers as young as 14 to stop by a rehearsal Thursdays from 6:45 to 9 p.m. at the Marion Gerrish Community Center, 39 West Broadway. Visit the chorus at rnhchorus.org or call 1-800-696-7351.
