---- — DERRY — An award-winning cartoonist makes a stop at Derry Public Library for a program on comics and their role in culture around the world.

N.H. cartoonist Marek Bennett offers a program for teens and adults, “Comics in World History and Culture,” on Nov. 13 at 6:30 p.m.

Bennett will present a whirlwind survey of comics from around the world and throughout history, with special attention to what the vibrant narratives tell about that time frame and the people who created the artwork.

Discussion will include showing sample comics representing cultures like Ancient Rome, Medieval Europe, the Mayans and modern Japan, along with the United States and other countries during wartime.

The program explores the various ways of creating and reading comics from around the world and what the techniques say about those cultures.

Bennett teaches music and comics around New England and is a teaching artist with the N.H. Council on the Arts. His publications include Nicaragua Comics Travel Journal and the travel webcomic Coffee+Dumplings+Komiks.

The library program is free and sponsored by New Hampshire Council on the Arts.

Teens are invited to participate in a Manga drawing workshop with Bennett prior to the main discussion at 4:30 p.m. Teens can sign up with Erin Robinson, teen librarian.
