It's a menagerie at Derry Village Elementary

First-graders in Derry get hands-on lesson

DERRY — It’s a jungle out there for first-graders at Derry Village Elementary School who got up close and very personal with some furry creatures in the classroom.

Wildlife educator Michelle DeBye, owner of Michelle’s Menagerie, brought a bevy of her favorite four-footed creatures, reptiles and birds to the school for a pre-winter vacation visit on Feb. 22.

Her show was based on some favorite American animals, including those representing South, Central and North America. Some making appearances were a turtle, skunk, a snake and a chinchilla.

DeBye gave students a chance for a rare, close-up look at some of her animals. She shared some information about their how they live, where they live and their personalities.

She has offered her animal shows to schools, libraries and other community events since 1989. Her animal programs include “African Animals,” “Awesome Australia,” “Bugs for Breakfast,” “Desert Animals,” “Farm Animal Fun” and much more.
