DERRY — First-grade students at Derry Village Elementary School got up close and personal with a very lucky visitor.
Massabesic Audubon animal naturalists paid a visit to the Derry school recently to teach the children about animals and to introduce them to Lucky, a painted turtle that came along to help.
Children got to see Lucky up close while hearing the story of how the turtle was rescued back in the 1950s.
The turtle is very lucky, it turned out, as he found a good home and people to care for him through the years, naturalists said.
The visit was part of the Massabesic center's outreach mission to educate and bring wildlife to schools in the area.
The Audubon program helped the first-graders kick off their official animal unit.
