LONDONDERRY — Nadine, Calvin, Lexie and Mackenzie were all well behaved enough to attend a special Blessing of the Animals at Londonderry’s United Methodist Church Saturday.
The Rev. Lynne Campbell knelt, petted and admired from a distance the many animals brought to the front of the church for the event.
There were dogs, lots of them, a goat named Nadine and even a caged chicken.
All well-behaved pets were welcome at the service, which takes place at many churches every fall, close to Oct. 4, which is the feast day for St. Francis of Assisi, who loved all living creatures.
“If you have men who will exclude any of God’s creatures from the shelter of compassion and pity,” St. Francis said, “you will have men who will deal likewise with their fellow men.”
A similar service was held Sunday at Chester Congregational and Baptist Church.
