'A Christmas Celtic Sojourn" comes to Derry

Holiday concert features dance, stories and music

DERRY — The Stockbridge Theatre at Pinkerton Academy will host “A Christmas Celtic Sojourn” featuring Brian O’Donovan.

The concert is Dec. 14 at 7:30 p.m. and is based on the popular weekly radio program “A Celtic Sojourn,” hosted by O’Donovan. The show features storytellers, dancing, Celtic music and entertainers.

The Derry stop is the only Granite State visit this season.

“We’ve had just a wonderful time the past 10 years bringing ‘A Chistmas Celtic Sojourn’ to audiences all around New England,” O’Donovan said. “Each year, we bring in new musicians, singers and dancers, so the holiday experience is different each year.”

The concert this year features Seamus Egan and his group Solas with Winifred Horan on fiddle, Mick McAuley on accordion and guitar, and Eamon McEholm, Steven Holloway and Chico Huff providing percussion and bass sounds.

Maeve Gilchrist brings her Scottish harp talents to the stage this year. Dietrich Strause and his Celtic brass trio also will perform.

Vocalists taking the Stockbridge stage include Moira Smiley, lead singer of the group Voco, and Maureen McMullan, star of the PBS special “Highland Heartbeat.”

There will also be dancers and international talents, including Riverdance star Liam Harney and young dancers from Liam’s Academy of Irish Dance in Walpole.

Tickets to “A Christmas Celtic Sojourn” range from $38 to $48 and are available through the Stockbridge box office or by visiting wgbh.org.
