DERRY — Salem resident Ashley Andrew, a former Syracuse University Orange Girl, and Derry resident Alyssa McLaughlin, a former University of Connecticut Huskie feature twirler, can be seen in “The Wolf of Wall Street,” which debuts on Christmas Day.
The movie stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Matthew McConaughey, Rob Reiner and Jonah Hill. It is directed by Martin Scorsese.
Both Red Star Twirlers were recruited through a New York casting agency, who contacted Red Star coach Gina Hutchinson, more than a year ago. Both women spent two days in New York City, learning their cameo roles and getting fitted for their Wonder Woman look-alike costumes. With them in the scene are 20 members of the Rutgers Marching Band, dressed in boxer shorts.
The movie is the true story of the rise and fall of Jordan Belfort, a Wall Street trader who lived high on other people’s money until he got caught by the Securities and Exchange Commission and sent to jail.
Andrew is now at Boston University, getting her master’s degree. While McLaughlin is getting her master’s degree at UConn and working for Aetna in Hartford.
Both women have been Red Star Twirlers since the age of 5 and performed overseas in Germany. Andrew performed with the Red Stars in China in 2010. McLaughlin has won numerous National Baton Twirling Championships, as well as being first runner-up to Miss Majorette of America, 2012 and a finalist several times in the Miss NH Scholarship Pageant.
