Children climb aboard 'The Polar Express'

Children take the journey of a lifetime

EAST DERRY — Every year about this time dozens of children climb aboard a magical train to take a holiday journey of a lifetime.

Taylor Library hosted its Polar Express story times last week, an annual event that brings out children to take an imaginary trip to the North Pole just in time for Christmas.

Any child with holiday hopes of meeting Santa Claus had their dreams come true as the library invited young participants holding train tickets to climb aboard the locomotive and travel to the snowy north.

The popular events are based on the story by Chris Van Allsburg, telling the tale of a young boy taking a snowy journey to meet Santa.

Children arrived in their pajamas, received a bell to ring and enjoyed stories while taking their train ride.

The library has held the story times for many years, director Linda Merrill said, and every year, the list is long of children wanting to take the trip.

There is often a waiting list.

Once the train “arrived” at the North Pole, Santa visited with each child and heard their wish lists for the holidays.

This was the 12th year Taylor Library has hosted its Polar Express event.
