Kids Coop Theatre presents 'Little Mermaid'

Kids Coop to stage 'The Little Mermaid Jr.'

By Julie Huss

---- — DERRY — It’s an under-the-sea adventure as Kids Coop Theatre prepares for its spring musical.

Students actors making up the theater troupe present Disney’s “The Little Mermaid Jr.” on stage at the Derry Opera House March 7-9.

The show is an adaptation of the 2008 Broadway production putting the popular mermaid Ariel and her handsome prince Eric in the spotlight as they go up against villain sea witch Ursula while spending time with all their aquatic friends.

Songs include “Under the Sea,” “Part of Your World” and “She’s in Love.”

The group took over Upper Village Hall last weekend for costume checks and other details. A trio of student directors is taking charge of this spring’s production.

Teen members Claire Neville, Londonderry, director; Sarah Rodgers, Derry, music director; and Brenna Morgan, Derry, choreographer lead the group as part of Kids Coop’s Young Directors Show program.

Claire, 17, has been involved with Kids Coop for the past seven years and has taken part in 12 productions. Sarah, 16, is also a Kids Coop Theatre veteran, having performed in many shows. Brenna, also a veteran of the Kids Coop stage, said she is happy to be part of this show.

Jude Bascom is Kids Coop’s professional director and mentor to the young student directors. She said all three had to apply for the position.

“They had to go through an interview process and then the board of directors chose the top students,” Bascom said.

This is the third Kids Coop Show has used students directors to take the helm. Bascom said they are doing a great job. She sits back to advise, but gives almost complete control to the young team.

“I pretty much let them do what they want,” she said.

She said the team is working hard and putting in many long hours to make the show a success.

The cast is made up of 38 young actors representing Derry, Londonderry, Litchfield, Windham, Hampstead, Sandown, Salem and Pelham.

Performances are March 7 at 7 p.m., March 8 at 1 and 7 p.m., and March 9 at 1 p.m. at the Derry Opera House, 29 West Broadway. Tickets are $12 and available at
