Hundreds fill school gym for annual health fair

Annual event drew hundreds of people

DERRY — This fair always draws a crowd.

The 10th annual senior health fair was held April 23 at West Running Brook Middle School. In only the first few hours of the fair, more than 600 people had come through the gym doors.

“By 10:30 a.m., you couldn’t move,” said Rod Pierce, a volunteer with Community Caregivers of Greater Derry.

He noted the big crowds were a good thing as so much valuable information was available to seniors in this one-stop shopping event.

More than 80 vendors, including health-care professionals and other health-related organizations, set up information displays at the fair. There were also screenings for bone health, vision, blood pressure and foot care.

Other groups in attendance included experts representing assisted living, mental health, home health care, recreation, and community opportunities for seniors.

Community Caregivers’ executive director Cindee Tanuma said the fair is a big draw for the region’s older citizens every year. She said this year’s crowd exceeded all expectations.

“We ran out of our 500 raffle tickets in the first one and a half hours,” she said.
