DERRY — The Derry Village Rotary Club organized a clothing drive for the benefit of the Derry community.
In early January, club members met with representatives of local community closets, including the Sonshine Soup Kitchen, the Thrift Shop at the Marion Gerrish Community Center and the Salvation Army, to determine the needs that each establishment was experiencing.
In response, during the entire month, club members gathered clothing and household items for donation. On Jan. 31, Charlie Crompton and Jennifer Devlin of the Derry Village Rotary Club delivered housewares to the Thrift Shop and 30 large sacks of clothing to the Sonshine Soup Kitchen, filling Crompton's large box truck.
Cynthia Dwyer of the Sonshine Soup Kitchen graciously agreed to sort the clothing donations for the three community closets, each according to their particular need. After the sorting, club members will then pick up the sorted donations for delivery to the Thrift Shop and the Salvation Army. It has been an uplifting experience for all involved.
There are many members of the community who are struggling this winter and the Derry Village Rotary Club applauds the efforts of the Sonshine Soup Kitchen, the Thrift Shop and the Salvation Army.
Community donations are welcomed at each of the community closets. The Sonshine Soup Kitchen is located at 4 Crystal Ave., the Marion Gerrish Community Center is at 39 West Broadway and the Salvation Army is at 18 Folsom Road.
The Derry Village Rotary Club meets Tuesday at 7:30 a.m. at the Marion Gerrish Community Center. For information about the club, email Ric Buzzanga at email@example.com.
