Rotary comedy night was a success

DERRY — The Derry Village Rotary and the Derry Rotary held their annual comedy night fundraiser, The Best of North Shore Comedy, on March 24 at Pinkerton Academy's Stockbridge Theatre.

Close to 500 community members attended this year's comedy fundraiser. Proceeds will aid in the donations and scholarships the Derry Rotary and the Derry Village Rotary support, both locally and internationally.

Together, both Rotaries have provided thousands of dollars to local nonprofit organizations; helped in beautifying Derry, the Robert Frost Farm and construction at Hood Park; provided financial support and product to the soup kitchen and food pantry; and supported the annual Christmas Fund and the Student of the Month programs at the local schools.

The Derry Village Rotary meets every Tuesday from 7 to 8:30 a.m. at the Marion Gerrish Community Center. The Derry Rotary meets at the same place on Thursdays from noon to 1:30 p.m. For more information about joining Rotary, contact Derry Village Rotary president Ric Buzzanga at ricbuz@aol.com.

Honors for excellence for woofmeow

DERRY — Woofmeow was selected as the Best Overall Retailer at the inaugural Global Pet Expo Retailer Excellence Awards.

These awards were designed to honor and recognize outstanding independent pet stores in a multitude of categories, including merchandising, customer service and store design.

Beating out over thousands of pet stores nationwide, woofmeow received the top prize of Best Overall Retailer. This award was designed to acknowledge a retailer who excels in all areas including sales, service, design and community. Nominees were considered for their ability to provide a clean, safe and professional environment for both customers and employees alike, while demonstrating care, concern and knowledge of companion animals.

Owner Mike Griffeth attributed much of his store's success at the awards to his devoted staff and their commitment to excellence. Additionally, woofmeow strives to maintain a traditional pet store atmosphere, noting how pet stores that sell live animals are becoming increasingly scarce.

"I have kids," Griffeth said, "and the idea of bringing them into a pet store with no pets just makes no sense to me."

The awards were handed out at this year's Pet Industry Breakfast March 1. Plans for next year's edition of the awards are already underway and the nomination process is expected to open within the next few months.
