‘Kids as Coins’ hits Matthew Thornton

LONDONDERRY — Second-graders at Matthew Thornton Elementary School are the latest students to take part in Hampshire First Bank’s Strive financial literacy program.

Customer service representative Rebekah Kersten returned for another visit to the school on Jan. 7 and 9 as part of a series of lessons on personal finance the bank is offering to local schools.

“Understanding how to make informed and thoughtful decisions about our finances is becoming more important earlier in life,” said Lauren Neves, branch manager, Hampshire First Bank of Londonderry. “Starting early with fun and informative financial literacy in the classroom will help students of all ages develop good financial habits, and pay more attention to how money is wisely saved and spent.”

The students were very excited to talk about money and participate in the “Kids as Coins” interactive lesson.

They tested their acting skills as they played the role of different coins and paired up with classmates to purchase items at the school store. Through this exercise, the students learned the characteristics and value of coins, as well as how to combine them to total a specific amount.

Hampshire First Bank’s financial education program, Strive, works with local teachers in the classroom to help today’s youth grow into financially responsible, independent adults. It is a source for learning and inspiration to help kids, teens, and young adults establish a positive relationship with money and navigate personal finance as their financial needs mature.

Friendly’s launches ‘Cones for Kids’

Friendly’s Ice Cream LLC has launched its 32nd annual “Cones for Kids” campaign.

The Valentine’s Day fundraiser will benefit Easter Seals NH’s Camp Sno-Mo in Gilmanton Iron Works, for children with disabilities and special needs.

For a $1 donation, Friendly’s provides restaurant guests with five Valentine’s Day cards, redeemable for free Friendly’s Kids Cones and a buy-one-get-one free adult entrée certificate. The campaign runs through Feb. 14.

Funds raised will support Easter Seals Camp Friendly’s programs.

Essential to building a sense of independence and accomplishment for thousands of children annually, Easter Seals Camp Friendly’s provides an opportunity for kids with disabilities to be included in regular camp activities like, boating and canoeing, swimming, archery, ropes courses, horseback riding, hiking, basketball and fishing.
