---- — DERRY — Sometimes an old piece of clothing or furniture can mean a new start for someone in need.
For those who shop at Finders Keepers in Derry, buying quality used clothing, housewares and furniture can bring in support for charities and military personnel serving overseas.
The Crystal Avenue business opened in August and is a resource for many local causes.
The store sells furniture, antiques, clothing and gifts at reasonable prices.
It’s not just that customers get a good deal, it’s how the money is then used to help others.
Finders Keepers owner Laura Barker said money is used to support local New Hampshire charities, many for children.
Money is also used to sponsor troops in combat through the Buffman Project.
The store acts as a drop-off point for other charities that collect food, Toys for Tots, blankets for rescue animals and cell phone recycling.
“Driving all over to drop off to different charities takes time and costs money,” Barker said in an email. “We found a way to overcome those challenges.”
Barker said her store is successful because people want to help others.
It’s easy to donate unwanted items that are no longer in use.
“Everyone has something in the attic, storage locker or basement they no longer use,” Barker said. “That item can become your contribution to charity.”
Finders Keepers’ goal is then to get the items needed by an organization to that group as soon as possible.
Barker said she is proud of the strong community ties that are the backbone of her store. New items come in daily and donations are always welcome.
In addition to the store at 16 Crystal Ave., other stores are located in Portsmouth and Exeter.
