There's no more Kentucky Fried Chicken in Derry

DERRY — Colonel Sanders' secret 11-herb and spice fried chicken recipe won't be a fixture on Crystal Avenue anymore.

The Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant at 10 Crystal Ave. closed its doors last month.

A handwritten note was attached to a door with a simple "This Location is Closed" message.

Brian Stepp was listed most recently as the local owner. He also is affiliated with Briley Investments Inc. of Lake Forest, Ill., an investment firm that deals in quick service restaurants and real estate.

The vacated building once known for its crispy strips and secret herbs and spices is listed through Prudential Verani Realty at an asking price of $790,000.

That price was for the building itself and some equipment, not the KFC franchise, according to Prudential officials.

The property has been listed for sale for about a year.

The Louisville-based KFC came on the scene in the mid-1950s, selling its secret recipe chicken. Now, the restaurant chain is in 109 countries, with more than 5,000 in the United States.

The Derry KFC made the news in 2010 when Stepp made a clean sweep of the establishment, laying off an entire 13-worker crew.

The restaurant then closed for several days for extensive training and cleaning, according to posted signs. Employees losing their jobs at the time said the business was managed poorly.

At that time, Stepp declined to go on the record with specifics, but did say the Derry location needed to make changes.

Recent attempts to reach Stepp were unsuccessful.

A KFC restaurant at 68 Nashua Road in Londonderry remains open for business.
