Shaw’s food drive underway

With Thanksgiving and the holiday season here, hunger relief efforts at Shaw’s Supermarkets, part of the nationwide Supervalu family of grocery stores, are well underway. Shaw’s recently donated 13,000 turkeys to six of its hunger relief partners in Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and Rhode Island.

The company also launched its Spirit of Giving Food Drive earlier this month; customers have already donated more than 17,000 food bags, enough to provide more than 68,500 meals. The program allows shoppers to purchase pre-assembled food bags at Shaw’s locations that will then be donated to local hunger relief partners and food banks.

From now through Dec. 27, Shaw’s customers can purchase pre-assembled bags that contain much-needed holiday food items ranging from green beans to tomato sauce for $5, $10 or $15. Once collected, the pre-assembled bags will go directly to community food banks and pantries throughout Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and Rhode Island. In keeping with the spirit of being a neighborhood grocer, all 169 Shaw’s locations have worked to identify local organizations within their communities who will be the recipients of the food.

“At Shaw’s, supporting the organizations that provide hunger relief is important to us and we are pleased to help area food banks get meals to those in need this holiday season,” said Mike Stigers, president. “As a grocer, we are highly aware of the hunger problems facing people and not only do we work hard to support the communities we serve, but are fortunate to have generous customers who have come together to help fight hunger.”

“This is a critical time of year for us as we work to provide not only holiday meals for the 143,000 men, women, and children that are food insecure in New Hampshire, but also a time to stock our shelves and those of our partner agencies to help get through the winter months,” said Mel Gosselin, executive director of the New Hampshire Food Bank. “Shaw’s and their customers continue to be a great partner in the fight against hunger and for that we are truly grateful.”
