Derry dentist honored for service
The New Hampshire Dental Society paid tribute to five of the state's top dentists at its annual meeting on May 18 in Meredith. The awards recognize their leadership, commitment to innovation and service to children, low-income and mentally ill populations.
Dr. John P. Ahern of Derry was awarded the Charles Lambrukos Award by the N.H. Dental Society Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the NH Dental Society, for his dedication to the improvement of oral health of children in the Derry area.
For more than 20 years, Ahern has been instrumental in the success of the Derry school dental program.
Other award winners were: Dr. A.J. Homicz of New Castle, the MacRury Award; Dr. Bryant Denk of Hanover, the President's Award; Dr. Thomas Timmons of Concord, the Community Service Award; and Dr. Dave Pak of Rochester and Gilford, the Component President's Award.
Kassas completes training program
Kristen Kassas, a sales associate in the Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage office in Londonderry, has successfully completed SkillBuilder, a critical component of the comprehensive SuccessBuilder training program which is designed and conducted by the Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage Career and Educational Development department.
SkillBuilder involves 11 days of classroom-based sales training and skill development. As part of the course work, Kassas received specialized training in several areas, including real estate market trends, techniques for marketing properties and managing the real estate transaction using innovative technology tools, negotiating strategies, buyer consultation, positioning and marketing strategy for seller clients and other topics and techniques important in the successful practice of real estate in today's digital world.

Worcester, MA, May 4, 2012—The Muscular Dystrophy Association's (MDA) 6th Annual ALS Evening of Hope will be presented by Sigel Family Foundation on Thursday, May 10th at the UMass Medical School in Worcester, MA at 6 p.m. There will be a cocktail reception, silent auction, gourmet food and award presentations. The Evening of Hope will benefit MDA's ALS Research and Clinical Care Program at UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester.
Three awards will be presented at the Evening of Hope, which include the James E. Wallace Jr. Evening of Hope Spirit Award, MDA Lou Gehrig Humanitarian Award and the Morton H. Sigel Memorial Award.
The James E. Wallace Jr. Evening of Hope Spirit Award will be presented to Wayne Harris of Northbridge. Mr. Harris was diagnosed with ALS in 2009 and is an inspiration to all he meets. His career was as an occupational therapist assisting and advocating for individuals living with disabilities to be more independent.
The MDA Lou Gehrig Humanitarian Award will be presented to Diane McKenna-Yasek RN, BSN, of the Neurology Department at UMass Memorial Medical Center. Diane is dedicated to providing the finest care to patients and families with ALS. She is also instrumental in the research being done into the causes of ALS - Lou Gehrig's disease - at Dr. Robert Brown's lab at UMass.
The final award, the Morton H. Sigel Memorial Award, was named in memory of Morton H. Sigel who passed away in 2006 after receiving a diagnosis of ALS. Mr. Sigel was a graduate and trustee of Clark University and an icon in the Worcester area. He founded Millbrook Distributors in 1960, received the Distinguished Service Award from Clark University in 2001 and was inducted into the Massachusetts Food Association Hall of Fame in 2005. Mr. Sigel also served as Chair of the Worcester Foundation for Biomedical Research, and was instrumental in facilitating the successful merger of the Worcester Foundation with University of Massachusetts Medical School. This award will be presented to Ride-Away Corp, which has been supportive and dedicated to the life of individuals with ALS, as well as MDA's fight against ALS and other neuromuscular diseases.
Addressing the group in regard to current ALS scientific research will be Robert H. Brown, D.Phil.,M.D., Chair of the Neurology Department at UMass Memorial Medical Center and Director of the MDA/ALS Center at UMass. Dr. Brown is an internationally known ALS clinical researcher and among the United States researchers who recently identified mutations in a gene on chromosome 16 that causes familial ALS. Dr Brown was last year's recipient of the MDA Lou Gehrig Humanitarian Award.
To date, MDA has earmarked hundreds of millions of dollars to ALS research, services and information programs. Since 2007, MDA and Augie's Quest has funded over 26.5 million dollars for ALS research in Massachusetts. Proceeds from this event will help to fund MDA's ALS research program and clinical services at UMass Memorial Medical School and UMass Memorial Medical Center, thus helping Central Massachusetts residents living with ALS.
