Popular local businessman returns to retail

Retail store will open Saturday in warehouse

DERRY — A local businessman is returning to retail.

“Dollar Bill” Burke will offer shopping at his Franklin Street Extension warehouse facility with a grand opening set for Saturday, June 7, at 8 a.m.

Burke said he will sell quality merchandise at good prices.

“I want to get back to the old school basics,” he said. “If it clicks, that’s great.”

Burke, with his animated auctioneer persona and strong ties to the community, left the retail end of his business two years ago when his 28,000-square-foot Rockingham Road store closed.

He continued his profitable wholesale and auction business, supplying items to auctions and charity events all over the East Coast.

Now, he said, it’s time to try retail again, offering his customers a “no frills” shopping experience for anything and everything at good prices, brand names and high quality.

“Walking into the warehouse is like returning to the old way of doing things,” Burke said.

The Franklin Street warehouse is chock full of merchandise ready to sell.

Burke is widely known for his television appearances, sporting a currency-draped hat and whipping off descriptions of the items he sold at his former store. That included everything from housewares and holiday decor, to sporting goods and toys.

But he also is known in the community as a strong supporter of children and programs that enhance education and numerous nonprofit groups in the area. He has helped organizations with fundraisers by using his talents as an auctioneer.

His new retail venture comes straight from the heart, something he wants his customers to enjoy.

“I think the missing piece was the retail,” Burke said. “We really love the people. I hope it’s great, I hope it’s fun, I hope they find us.”

Burke is currently creating videos about his business that air on YouTube. He said he is excited to be adding the retail piece back into his Dollar Bill world.

“We’re just trying to stay middle class,” he said. “We’ll do what we do best.”

That includes keeping with the basics.

“No shopping carts required,” he said. “We’re putting something back on the map.”

Dollar Bill’s Retail Outlet is located at 115 Franklin Street Extension. Call 965-4802 for information.
