---- — DERRY — After just a couple of months in business, USA Chicken & Biscuit on Crystal Avenue has closed.
Last week, a banner boasting the best chicken in town was still hanging from the restaurant’s roadside sign. But inside, stools were stacked up on tables and all lights inside were out.
The building, formerly home to KFC, was sold on Aug. 22, 2013 while it was vacant, according to town assessing records. The restaurant’s health license was issued on Jan. 2 and it opened midway into February.
News of it closing came as a surprise to many around the Derry Municipal Center. Some officials said they didn’t know what happened and others weren’t aware it had closed.
“I’m not sure why they closed,” planning director George Sioras said. “There were no issues on our end, on planning’s end. They got all of their approvals.”
Health officer Paul Raiche had no explanation for the restaurant’s sudden departure, saying it had no violations on record beyond failing to notify him that it was closing.
Code enforcement officer Bob Mackey similarly had no answer for why the restaurant closed.
“It certainly wasn’t on the code enforcement or building front,” Mackey said. “They didn’t give it much of a run.”
Attempts to reach several people associated with the business, including business owner Rahim Woodod, were unsuccessful.
