LONDONDERRY — Chris George, owner of Mr. Steer's Meats, has hired locally renowned chef David Smith to operate his carry-out business, located next to the meat market on Buttrick Road.
"I want people to know that the take-out cafe is now back under Mr. Steer," George said. "The previous owners have left the building."
Smith, former owner of Loafer's Restaurant in Salem and a former chef at Brookstone's Grill in Derry and C.R. Sparks in Manchester, will now manage and run Mr. Steer's Kitchen and Carry Out Cafe. It was scheduled for a soft opening this week for the lunch crowd.
The cafe will be able to seat a dozen patrons, but most customers will choose their food items for take-out. There is a buffet-style bar in the middle of the space with six hot dishes to choose from, including chicken pot pies, macaroni and cheese, and other customer favorites. There is also a salad bar and a selection of soups.
Smith will work with another chef, Frank Jarek, to gauge patrons' choices over the first few weeks. They are putting up chalkboard menus each day and will see which items are favored.
"We will offer creative comfort food," Smith said. "We are also introducing noodle bowls that people can choose from."
Lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Eventually, the cafe will be open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. for people who want to pick up cooked food for dinner. A catering menu will also be offered.
The cafe is located at 27 Buttrick Road.
