Parade-goers are generous to food pantry

DERRY — The Derry Holiday Parade Nov. 26 saw thousands of community members showing their support for the local food pantry while viewing one of the best holiday parades in Southern New Hampshire.

For the 20th year, Derry Village Rotarians started the parade off by pushing grocery carts along the downtown parade route. They collected nonperishable food items and cash donations. As their carts quickly filled, the donated items were transferred to a large trailer following behind them.

By the end of the parade, that trailer was loaded with more than 2,000 pounds of food. Cash donations totaled $1,700, an amount that will greatly benefit the pantry that provides residents with items for hundreds of meals.

As Derry Village Rotary President Elect Susanne Bernier-Robinson pointed out, "It didn't feel like Christmas with such unseasonably warm temperatures, but the generosity of our community members certainly made it feel like Christmas. We collected more than a ton of food and $1,700 worth of donations for the Derry community food pantry."

The Derry Village Rotary meets every Tuesday from 7 to 8:30 a.m. at the Marion Gerrish Community Center. Contact Ric Buzzanga at RicBuz@aol.com for information about joining Rotary International.
