Ocean State Job Lot to open in Derry March 14

DERRY — Ocean State Job Lot is set to open on March 14 at its new location at 30 Manchester Road.

The store will be the 10th Ocean State store in New Hampshire. It is located in the former 120,000-square-foot Wal-Mart building.

The company, with headquarters in Rhode Island, has 106 stores scattered across New England and New York state.

Other New Hampshire locations include Hooksett, Woodsville, Ossipee, Northumberland, Walpole, Portsmouth, Peterborough, Concord and Newport.

The Derry store will employ 30 workers.

Ocean State Job Lot prefers to take over older discount-style stores or supermarket spaces for new stores, according to its website. It is known for its sale of brand name items at discount prices, due to overstocking or discontinuation of products. The company often uses a previous store’s fixtures and other equipment to help save money.

The Derry building did not need many renovations or upgrades once Wal-Mart left, according to Ocean State’s construction/project manager Scott Crawford. He said only some new paint and minor changes were done.

The former Wal-Mart space suits the new store perfectly, Crawford said.

“Sometimes, we take over large supermarket spaces, too, that are appealing to us,” he said.

Crawford said the company is excited about bringing another Ocean State store to New Hampshire.

Derry officials approved the new Wal-Mart store as part of its economic development plan in the TIF, or tax increment financing, district on Manchester Road.

Wal-Mart officials said during the store’s planning stages they like to see their older properties get new life once newer stores are built.

Ocean State officials are finalizing details prior to getting a final occupancy permit for the store.

The grand opening and ribbon cutting on March 14 begin at 10 a.m. Hours for the new store will be Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Sunday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
