Chamber honors its Citizen, Business of the Year

DERRY — It’s time to honor the area’s top citizen and business.

The Greater Derry/Londonderry Chamber of Commerce hands out its annual awards Thursday, Oct. 25, for Citizen and Business of the Year.

Derry resident Janet Conroy takes the top citizen honors for 2012.

Mr. Steer meat market in Londonderry and owner Christopher George are Business of the Year.

Both Conroy and George will be honored at the Chamber of Commerce dinner/awards event at Promises to Keep.

For George, it’s been 38 years of working hard and enjoying the meat business in Londonderry.

“After 38 years, I can’t believe I’m getting this award,” he said.

George is the third generation of his family to work in the meat business.

Since Mr. Steer opened in 1975 at its Route 102 location, George has shared his passion for meat with several members of his family who continue to work beside him at the store’s newest location off Buttrick Road.

George is credited for his ongoing support of community charities and causes including the American Legion, area food pantries and Londonderry’s ALERT program.

For Conroy, it’s another ‘first’ for this prominent Derry citizen who has tackled many projects and causes.

Conroy has lived in Derry for 50 years and jumped right into many of the community’s committees.

“The opportunities opened up and I stepped right in,” she said.

Conroy was the first female elected to the town’s Board of Selectmen and became the group’s first chairman. She also was the first female to join the Derry Village Rotary Club.

“It’s kind of nice,” Conroy said of her award. “You don’t go into politics (or anything) looking for thanks, but it’s nice to get it.”

Both Conroy and George will be honored and will ride in this year’s Chamber of Commerce Holiday Parade in Derry.

Conroy said she would love to ride in the parade in one of Dr. Timothy Butterfield’s horse-drawn carriages.

The parade is set for Nov. 24 at 1 p.m.
