Derry planners approve new credit union plan

DERRY — Planning officials gave conditional approval to a new credit union.

Triangle Credit Union is set to take over an existing space at 3 Windham Road. The building was formerly a medical facility.

Chris Tymula, representing Salem-based MHF Design Consultants, presented the plan at a meeting March 20.

The Triangle plan includes the addition of two drive-up banking lanes, one lane for ATM access and one more serving as a traffic bypass lane.

There will be 30 parking spaces for the new business.

The original site was first approved by the town back in 1995. Before the medical facility was located there, it was home to a funeral business.

To keep with the Triangle name, a three-sided sign will be placed at the business, along with other site upgrades and improvements.

“This fits into the whole motif of the bank,” Tymula said.

Planning Board Chairman David Granese made his usual request for the use of native material.

“How about using some granite?” he asked. “We throw it out there for a lot of buildings.”

Town Administrator John Anderson told Triangle representatives they should also consider how they plan to use septic or sewer in their building plans as the town is ready to begin a major water/sewer extension project not far from the site.

“It might behoove you to look at that,” Anderson said.

Al Deltrecco of 8 Kendall Pond Road expressed concern a new banking business might generate too much traffic for that part of town.

“It’s just going to start getting crazy out there,” he said.

Deltrecco said visibility often is affected due to some sloping of the properties in the area and he worried there may be trouble.

The previous businesses did not generate as much traffic as a credit union would, he said.

Planners granted conditional approval to the plan. Triangle representatives said they were happy to continue to serve Derry and already have about 5,000 local customers.
