---- — DERRY — The widening of Route 28/Manchester Road is still on track for a fall finish date.
The project to widen the road from the intersection of Tsienneto up past Ashleigh Drive is on time, thanks to favorable weather since the work began.
The Public Works Department puts out a weekly update to the community to give updates on the work.
“The town is pleased with the progress to day,” public works director Mike Fowler said.
This week’s plan includes widening the road between the Sanmina property and the Fireye business at the corner of Tsienneto and Manchester Roads.
Curbs will be installed, with minor delays expected. Foundations for future traffic signals will be installed.
This is Phase II of the total project.
“Everything is progressing on schedule,” Town Administrator John Anderson said at a meeting last week.
Anderson said overhead and underground utility work are almost completed.
The successful timeline has been a boon for new retail in the area, too.
New stores now open in the midst of the construction project include the Woof Meow Family Pet Center, Goodwill, and a new Panera restaurant.
The star of the retail slot off Ashleigh Drive is the new super-sized Wal-Mart, set to officially open Sept. 12.
The new, 147,000-square-foot, 24-hour store will offer wider aisles and an expanded grocery section.
Inside the store, Subway and Service Credit Union will set up shop.
Anderson said he was impressed with the progress at the Wal-Mart site.
“The landscaping is done,” he said. “It’s a great view when you drive up.”
Fowler said with Wal-Mart slated to open soon, crews will be focusing their work on areas that will make for minimal impact during peak shopping hours.
The entire road project is expected to be done by November.
“We are on budget and on schedule,” Fowler said. “Things have gone very well.”
